Chief
The chief is an ordinary located at the top of the shield. It is between a third and a quarter of the shield's height. If charged, the chief is typically wider to allow room for the charges drawn there.
The chief is sometimes erroneously blazoned as a division in order to achieve an effect which would breach the rule of tincture.
